Time wasting websites

October 30th, 2009 — 7:11am

One of my roommates is absolutely amazing at finding the best websites to help you procrastinate. We all know there are millions of websites out there, but she has a skill for finding some of the most funny and creative ones I’ve ever seen. My top two favorites are:

1. Lamebook.com: This website takes everything off of facebook (including pictures, statuses, conversations, etc.) that real people post. They show the lamest of the lame and can entertain for hours. If you are a facebook fan, you know you have seen people post things that just make you ask why? Well someone did something about it and lamebook.com was created.

2. Peopleofwalmart.com: This website shows pictures of people, at Walmarts all over the country, who are far from chic but hilarious none the less. It is difficult to describe, but I recommend you check it out.

I hope that you enjoy these time wasters, and are never featured on either. If you know of any similar websites I’m always on the hunt!

New Movie Theatre at LA Live!

October 29th, 2009 — 7:56am

As a major movie fan, Tuesday night was a very exciting night for me. It was the grand opening of the Regal Theaters at LA Live! LA Live was swamped with people because of this…and maybe because of the Lakers vs. Clippers game. Right now, it is only showing the Michael Jackson movie, but has a ton of great movies coming soon.

LA Live!

LA Live!

Living in the LA area, I’m so excited about a new movie theater. I always hated driving out to the Grove and going through all of the hassle to get there. Now, there is conveniently a brand new, fancy shmancy theater right down the street. I’m seriously considering going down there to see the MJ movie and get a sneak peak of the setup!

Did any of you check it out last night or are you planning on heading out there? If you’ve gone, let me know what you think of it! You can find out showtimes and more info at lalive.com.

Everything’s better at Luna

October 28th, 2009 — 8:02am
Goat Cheese Fondu...MMMMMM

Goat Cheese Fondu...MMMMMM

Everyone has their favorite place to eat. Maybe its a little diner, or a coffee shop, or even a hamburger stand…. well My favorite place is kind of a combination of all those things wrapped into one amazing dining experience. When I lived in Los angeles everyone knew there was one place you could find me EVERY Sunday night at 9pm. This was my weekly (yes weekly) pilgrimage to Luna Park on La Brea and Wilshire blvd. in Los Angeles. Every week was a new experience because there is nothing half-assed on the menu. Reasonable prices and a chic euro environment (with just the right splash of rock and roll), Luna park was truly my home away from home. The staff is young energetic and honest. I’m primarily a Whiskey guy but if you want the best Mojito in Town, go see Amanda Alva behind the bar on any given weekend…. she’ll even call you a cab home (She’s also super HOT)… Remember to tell her Johnny says “HI”!!! Now I know your asking “Johnny, what do you recommend I order when I visit Luna Park?”… Well I’m glad you asked…. Start off with my favorite appetizer, warm goat cheese fondu with bread and apple sliced… Its just enough to entice the pallet. For the main coarse go in for the kill with the Hanger steak… No A1 sauce necessary. The Salsa topping is good enough to bottle and wash your hair with….. Finally for desert, try the Banana Fosters. Soft hand whipped vanilla Ice cream topped with fresh bananas and crispy caramelized topping!!! (Don’t forget to schedule a spin class the minute you get home)….. I Miss Los Angeles everyday because it is full of gems in the ruff… Luna Park is my Chic gem and I hope you give it a chance to be yours too…….

BEST MOJITOS IN TOWN!!!

PRIVATE

PRIVATE

Happy Tuesday Chic readers!!! Its official Denmark is the new France! Seriously! The music coming out of Denmark in the last two years is really turning heads and this weeks selection is no exception. What happens when you mix the 70’s, 80’s, Justin Timberlake, with a pinch of David Bowie? You get the Danish band PRIVATE. They first hit the scene a few years ago with a couple internet hits that made them go top ten over seas. They are virtually unknown in the United States, but I am bound to change all that. There is also talk of an album due out in 2010. Lead by Thomas Troelsen, an off beat androgynous euro chic character, Private is remenesant of old disco tech and 80’s grand master funk… Pump it up and CLICK HERE for SECRET LOVER!!!!

Love my Louie

October 26th, 2009 — 1:49pm

I’ve heard that it’s good to take new routes to places you frequent. Taking the scenic route home can be an eye opening experience. I decided to try this today and took a different route from my parking spot to the office.

Better than a purse

Better than a purse

Typically I try and take the least bum infested path. Walking up Hope Street, passing through the LA Public Library, and cruising up 5th. It a nice 4 block stroll and I can make a Coffee Bean pit stop on my way into the office. Perfect.

Today, however, I switched things up and boy am I glad that I did. As I meandered up 7th, taking in the new sights and sounds I looked up at the windows of a place I often passed but never really took the time to look at because I could never really tell what it was they were selling. Today, I took a chance and walked inside.

Low and behold! Louie turned out to be the most fantastic discovery I’ve made downtown since Varnish! I felt like I had walked into a fancy perfume store crossed with a European bakery. Yes, I know that sounds totally weird but visit and you’ll see what I mean.

I tried their California Veggie Sandwich and it was FAN-TASTIC! The cucumber gave it a good crunch and the yummy curry spread gave it a delicious blast of flavor. Plus, it was all cutely wrapped up in tissue paper ready to slip in my bag. Besides grab-and-go goods, Louie also has a full bar, a huge selection of freshly baked pastries, and a reat area where you can grab cheese, wine, meats, and sauces to throw together for a quick Euro dinner.

Bottega Louie officially wins my vote for best Louie around.

Chic Job: Stationary Designer

October 23rd, 2009 — 7:00am

Marleine Pacilio

Marleine Pacilio

What is your Job Title/Company/how long you’ve worked there?
I am the owner and creative director of Paper Olive, the stationery design studio I launched in 2007.

How did you get into your current line of work?
When I was planning my wedding almost three years ago, I couldn’t find a comprehensive design solution for my unique color palette (orange and green). I wanted stationery that was chic, modern, playful, elegant AND dramatic — a tall order. When I couldn’t find a designer with just the right look, I jumped in and put together some of the stationery elements myself. I loved that creative process so much, and had such a great response from my guests (as well as my own wedding vendors, including the current catering manager of the Four Seasons Hotel in Westlake Village), that I started to consider making it a business. Two years later, here I am.

What do you wear to the office?
When I’m home designing, it’s usually the most comfortable thing I can find, since I’m sitting for long periods of time dreaming up visions of paper couture! When I’m out meeting clients, I like to look professional, but relaxed. My standard uniform is a good pair of jeans, a chic top or stylish tee/jacket combo, and great heels. I wear lots of black and white, usually with a pop of color on my feet. Keeps things fun.

What is your favorite part of your job?
Wow. Tough. I would say it’s a tie between the process during which I must translate my conversations with my clients — all the notes, ideas, colors, visions — into a design concept. The literal process of creating a new design is hugely rewarding. Also, the moment when I present the physical sample of a new custom design to a bride. When I know I’ve nailed the design and I see my client’s face light up with delight, I couldn’t be happier.

What is your least favorite part of your job?
Accounting. Ugh.

What characteristics do you have that make this job a good fit for you?
I truly thrive on art, fashion, color, design, architecture, paper — all things beautiful and tactile. It makes me appreciate the work that I’m doing beyond just the task at hand. I actually love the things I’m creating for my clients — design makes me happy — and that happiness comes through in my work. It’s great for my clients, and so it’s a blast for me.

What does the future hold for you career wise?
I would love to expand my business to a second office on the east coast, in New York City. I live in Los Angeles but I’m from the east coast, and so to capture the visions of both LA and New York clients on a daily basis would be a dream. I’m also hoping to partner with a certain cake studio to offer clients a unique service they might not receive anywhere else. Details are still percolating!

What’s a typical workday include?
Lots of email. Most of my business comes in through referrals and emails, so I’m busy helping people find what they need much of the day, and I handle it all personally. But almost every day includes a some design — whether for a client or for the Paper Olive blog. Adobe Illustrator is always open on my laptop. I also write all of my blog articles, so I spend a good amount of time planning or writing them day to day. Finally, one of my favorite parts of the day is spent researching fabrics, papers, textiles or accessories for new clients & designs. It’s a little like a treasure hunt, and when it all comes together, it’s really a lot of fun. Work, but fun.

If you could do anything else for a living what would it be?
That’s easy. Rock star.

Spooky Cookie

October 22nd, 2009 — 7:00am
Two Halloweens ago, my friend Erin made the most strangely addicting treats, Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies. With canned pumpkin and applesauce instead of oil they are moist, healthy (ish), and the perfect autumn treat to bring to your next potluck.

Ghoulishly Good

Ghoulishly Good

1 cup canned pumpkin

1 cup white sugar

1/2 cup applesauce

1 egg

2 cups all-purpose flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon milk

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

2 cups semisweet chocolate chips

Directions:

Combine pumpkin, sugar, applesauce, and egg. In a separate bowl, stir together flour, baking powder, salt and cinnamon. Dissolve baking soda with milk and stir it in. Add flour mixture to pumpkin mixture and mix well. Add vanilla and chocolate. Drop by spoonful onto greased cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes.

Easy Peasy! Enjoy these Halloween delights!

It’s Jessica Ya’ll!

October 21st, 2009 — 7:01am
Pump it Up!

Pump it Up!

It doesn’t really matter what you think of Jessica Simpson…

“she lost the best man she’ll ever have!”

“I was so sad when that coyote ate her dog”

“she should never have worn high waisted jeans with her booty!”

“she’s a cheesy pop singer who peaked in the 2002″

“her abs are the best part of Dukes of Hazard”

Regardless of what you’ve said or not said, one thing remains true… that girl makes a damn good pump.

Now, I’m not naive enough to believe that Jess holes up in some cottage cobbling together these beauties, in fact I’d be willing to wager that her name on the product is the closest she ever gets to some of these numbers, but the fact remains. For around (and sometimes under) $100 you can get a gorgeous pair of pumps, flats or boots, that are fashionable and sexy and make you feel fantastic without the guilt of dropping a few Benjamin’s on something that might be out of style next week. Upon further inspection of the Jessica Simpson Line I found that like any good celebrity lifestyle brand, she’s also offering bags, belts, lingerie, and just about anything you can imagine. All of which are reasonably priced and pretty cute.

So silence that voice in your head that says you’d never be a shoe sellout, because you’ll totally jump on the band wagon when you realize you can get all the fashion, for half the price!
