We Need to Breakup

December 28th, 2009 — 7:27am
The Break Up

The Break Up

For Christmas I gave my husband a short list of random things… jewelry cleaner, aviator sunglasses, and an item I haven’t purchased (let alone asked for) since I was in my teens.

I wanted the Break Up CD from Pete Yorn and Scarlett Johansson becuase I’d heard one of the fabulously jazzy number at a friends house and totally dug it. Usually I’m an ITunes worshiper and buy all my music in 99 cent intervals… but I actually liked the sound of that one song so much I was willing to commit to the whole album. Chic Readers, it’s so good. PERFECT for winter; and feels bluesy without making you depressed.

If you’re not ready to commit, go to ITunes and give Relator a listen. It makes me love Scar-Jo even though I normally hate her for her perfect lips/body/hair/boobs/husband. Damn it, why must she be SO amazing at EVERYTHING?!?!

Hugo, No You Go!

December 22nd, 2009 — 6:30am
Dos Tacos Por Favor!

Dos Tacos Por Favor!

Every time I exit the 101 to head over Coldwater I see it… Hugo’s Tacos a small shack with a vibrant logo and a line around the block. Since I rarely head into to Beverly Hills (via Coldwater) unless it’s for a meeting, I never seem to have time for this little hovel slinging Mexican fare. Today is different though… Today, I’m on vacation. So, after watching 4 back to back episodes of No Reservations (love a Bordain marathon!) I decided to go “explore”. By explore I meant that I wanted to eat at a joint I’d never been to before. Now Hugo’s isn’t exactly Sri Lankan street-side curry like Anthony waxes poetic, but it was what I could come up with on the fly, and it didn’t disappoint.

I had a chicken and an al pastor taco (a bargain at $2 a piece) and let the order taker choose my salsa (honey chipotle = spicy yum) and sat alone on at the small wooden table enjoying the slow burn of whatever they coat their pork with. What a lovely discovery, what a happy new find. I highly recommend it for anyone else who hasn’t managed to stop in for a visit yet.

Got New Year’s Plans?

At the gym yesterday, I swear, I heard this question about 15 times. New Year’s is a tough one here in LA. House parties run the risk of being shut down by the po and Hollywood is just a mess. But come on, no one wants to be singing Auld Land Syne by their lonesome when the clock strikes 12.

My solution- avoid HWood and WeHo and go to a one-stop-New Year’s-shop this December 31st. Our beloved Dolce Group and Night Vision Entertainment (of Pandora) have come together to present 2010: A Space Odyssey. With an open bar, munchies from Dolce Group restaurants: Ketchup, Bella, and Geisha House, a live performance by Shiny Toy Guns, and a meteor shower at midnight, this is the place to be at the stroke of midnight.

Tickets are going fast. Get yours at http://www.PandoraNightlife.com and party like it’s 2009.

Xmas shopping; Man edition.

December 16th, 2009 — 11:43am

Yesterday while Erika and I were having lunch, we started to talk about what we were buying our loved ones’ for the holidays.  As usual, we began to list our accomplishments and oooed and awwwed at each other’s retail/creative prowess.  Then we got to discussing gifts for men.   I don’t think there is anything harder than to shop for a man, especially a man that has no clear direction in terms of what they like.

We decided to brainstorm ideas and decided that shopping for  a man can be really tough.  They’re not easily wooed by bags, don’t melt over fragrances, and probably don’t care if the jeans you buy them are “IN”.  Men are pretty basic for the most part and don’t really focus on themselves the way women do.  I think Christmas is a perfect time to introduce some luxury and style into your guys life without making him feel alienated.

Dear Chic Readers, here are some Xmas gift ideas as per Erika and I;

1) This is something that most men don’t even think twice about.  A bathrobe.  Seriously, a nice soft bathrobe can make such a difference… not only are they comfortable, but they can really keep a guy warm when getting out of the shower on those chilly mornings.  I personally love a white cotton bathrobe. And if you want to make it extra special, go ahead and add his initials.

The men's line comes in blue :)

The men's line comes in blue :)

2) Skincare! I think this is crucial for men.  Most men don’t even think twice about their skin; they shave with soap, they sweat, they don’t protect it from the sun.  There are several products that I have personally used that honestly make a world of difference. I would say my favorite product line is Kielh’s for men.  Their facial fuel (moisturizer) leaves the skin feeling super soft and their shaving cream is unparalleled. Every Christmas, Kielh’s puts out gift sets so it’s a great way to introduce the product line. I’ve also used (and really like) Baxter of California. Target even has the Jack Every Man collection which works nicely as well.

3) Can I just say that I love Jeans.  I think every man in the world owns a pair of jeans and if they don’t they should.  Jeans are a great gift for any guy, specifically Levi’s.  Not only are they affordable, but they come in tons of fits, washes, and are forever fashionable.  They can be dressed up, dressed down, torn, dragged, and they age amazingly. I personally like the 511 (skinny) but one model you can’t go wrong with is the classic 501. Better yet, you don’t have to deal with those sparkly-gross atrocities that Christian Audigier puts out.  Barf.

4) Leather goods.  You can never go wrong with anything leather.  Anything as simple as a messenger bag gets an instant upgrade once it’s done in leather.

5) Fragrance.  I know this is a tough one and I generally don’t like to buy fragrances for anyone.  It’s such a personal thing that I’m always afraid of gifting it because they might hate it.  I do, however, own a ton of cologne and these are just some of my personal favorites.   You’re probably going to laugh, but Paris Hilton’s Paris for Men cologne honestly smells amazing.  All these recommendations are nicely balanced so none of these colognes are too fruity or spicy. Here are others that I HIGHLY recommend; Calvin Klein Intense, Dolce & Gabbana The One, Banana Republic Black Walnut, Channel Homme Allure Sport.

Dolce & Gabbana's The One

The good thing about gifts like these is that you can go fancy or affordable.  There is a ton of variation in between so choose accordingly.  Hope you have fun shopping!!!

Cut It Out!

December 16th, 2009 — 7:59am
Sliced and Diced

Sliced and Diced

Alright Chic Readers,

It’s been a while since I’ve had to pull out my soap box, but some misguided celebrities have forced my hand. I feel I MUST say something, lest you think this new fashion trend is something to aspire to instead of just another mistake like the one shoulder dress. I’m talking about CUTOUTS.

Where did these come from?

Why are normally fashionable beauties wearing these on the red carpet?

Don’t they understand this look can only be pulled off by Call Girls and Animated Vixens?

The thing is… I know you’re all about to start shopping for you holiday frocks and that fabulous New Year’s Eve gown and I just want to make sure you know that this look is terrible. First of all, you need the PERFECT body to pull it off, and even some ladies with the perfect body still have some “spillage”.

Also, this is SUCH a fad ladies… next season you wouldn’t be caught dead in something this trendy, so why waste money on it now?!

Two terrible trends too much!

FILTHY DUKES

FILTHY DUKES

Happy Tuesday chic readers! Its almost christmas, Heres a great last minute gift idea!!! ….MUSIC!!! This week I will recommend a band I would love to have play at my holiday festivities… Filthy Dukes!!! Lost in the earlier shadows of  DJ’s like Hot Chip, and LCD Sound System, this English electro band was bound to be recognized…. They have been DJ and supporting like type artists for years and finally in March 2009 they released a seriously chic and sophisticated debut album, Nonsense in the Dark! It is indeed dark, refreshing and best of all oozes sex appeal…. Turn out the light, pump up the volume, start grinding those hips and CLICK HERE for one of my favorites, Light Heart Skip Cross!….. Then go stuff it in someone’s stocking!!!!

December 11th, 2009 — 11:44am

Let’s be real… I’m one case of wine away from having a full-blown drinking problem.

That being said, I’m always looking for new and interesting drinks and now that we’re in the middle of winter I’m leaning to something a little toastier. Below find a few of my new favorites, and let me know if you’ve got a fabulous hot number that I should be trying out.
