California – The redwood is the official state tree. Some of the giant redwoods in Sequoia National Park are more than 2,000 years old. Pretty amazing to think how much they have seen, how many winters, summers and fires they have survived.

January 6, 2012 marks the beginning of New Mexico’s 100th anniversary of statehood. President Taft signed the proclamtion at approximately 11:30 a.m. New Mexico residents around the state are being urged to honk their car horns at that time in celebration!

I live in Dothan, a city in southeast Alabama. Every year they have a big fair called “the peanut festival”. The reason they celebrate the peanut is because the cotton they’d always grown was all but destroyed by an insect called the boll weevil. Farmers finally began to diversify their crops and found peanuts were easier to grow than cotton and were also very profitable. So, in 1919, the nearby city of Enterprise, Alabama erected the world’s only monument to an insect. In the center of the town is a water fountain and in the middle of that on a pedestal, is a life size, alabaster, grecian-style woman holding a boll weevil above her head. True fact, you can google it for the entire story of the monument.

A few facts about my great state of Oregon………… The Tillamook Cheese Factory is the largest cheese factory in the world. A block of it would look great on an Oregon cutting board from Heirloom company. Another great fact in 1971 Oregon became the first state to ban the use of non-returnable bottles and cans. The law is credited with reducing litter and increasing container recycling. As a result, items which used to make up 40% of roadside litter now represents about 6%.

The state fossil of California is the saber-toothed tiger. It was a fierce predator about 4-5 feet long and 3 feet tall, weighing about 440 lbs. It was a bit smaller than a modern-day lion, but much heavier. Who knew we even had a state fossil?

Michigan is the only place in the world with a floating post office, which is frequently attacked by disgruntled former employees “going pirate”.

Ok, so maybe it doesn’t actually get attacked. But it’s a real floating post office! Michigan is the only place in the world with a floating post office. The J. W. Westcott II is the only boat in the world that delivers mail to ships while they are still underway. They have been operating for 125 years.

CT is a small state and I am always amused by inventions. PEZ candy and the original wiffle ball are manufactured here. We are also home to the first hambuger. Now some of you may not know where CT is (believe me I have been asked that) and a typical response for where I live is “I live about halfway between New York City and Boston” then I get the “oh okay now I know where that is”

    Woo Pig Sooie! (Arkansas)

Arkansas means south wind and is derived from a name used to describe the Quapaw tribe. The French Jesuits called them Oo-gaq-pa, which morphed to Oo-ka-na-sa, then Arkansoa, then Arkensa, then Arkancas, and finally Arkansas.

I would love a board in the shape of Egypt, because it is a beautiful country with some of the most delicious foods imaginable. But wait, this isn’t exactly a piece of trivia… how about this: Egypt is home to thrice as many camels as people.

If I have to pick a state though, I’ll go for Indiana – to celebrate my love for Parks and Recreation.

I was so happy when you shared this amazing company with us a few months ago that I promptly ordered the state of Texas for a Christmas present. Well Dec. 1st rolls around & I can’t find where I placed the state of Texas! I thought I was going crazy. My hubby and my daughter helped me look and they couldn’t find it either so my poor friend in Texas didn’t get her Christmas present. I know I have it because I opened it and LOVED it so I wrote her a cute note that one day soon she will be getting a surprise present in the mail. It might be March or it might be June. If I win, it would certainly make her day and mine! Thanks for the chance!

My state has the largest trees in the world (Sequoia) , the great Mojave Dessert, contains both the highest peak (Mt Whitney) and the lowest elevation (Death Valley) within the contiguous US, over 800 miles of coastline, and is home to the entertainment capital of the world. My state is also for its nuts. The kind that grow on trees and those that don’t. Gotta love California!
