Have Yourself an Eco-friendly Christmas

Season's Greenings

Now that Turkey day has trotted, let’s talk Christmas. While Thanksgiving is notorious for overcooking, Christmas is the holiday for overspending. On Thanksgiving we waste food. On Christmas we waste, well, EVERYTHING. This year, Chic Readers, let’s each try to find one area where we can cut back and NOT WASTE ANYTHING. I have 3 ways to do this.

I'm Dreaming of a Green Christmas...

Make your own wrapping paper. Get a few brown paper bags, cut open the seams so that you have one big flat piece. Flip to the blank side that has no writing or logos. Cut a kitchen sponge into the shape of a star. Dip in gold/red/green paint. Stamp sponge on paper. Repeat. Allow to dry. Voila! Beautiful and Eco-Friendly wrapping paper.
Decorate your tree using only found objects. Take a walk through the park. Collect sticks, pine cones, dried leaves, and sprigs of berries (preferably non-poisonous if you have kids, pets, or curious significant others). Take your goods home and spray paint a few items gold or red for some color. Use wire ornament hooks to hang your eco-ornaments on your tree.
Buy charity gifts. Visit Charity Choice and choose from over 100 Charities to donate to. Put the donation under your receiver’s name and they will receive monthly updates about the progress of their cause. Make sure to tailor the cause to the gift receiver. For example, Ivan likes cats so I would donate to Alley Cat Allies in his name. Prrrrowww…

Let’s Say Thanks!

Since Thanksgiving is quickly approaching, I thought now would be a great time to talk about one of the ways Xerox is helping us all say thanks. They have started their “Let’s Say Thanks” program, where anyone can go to their website and send a personalized message to the troops overseas. This is a completely free service and a great way to show your support for the troops, whether or not you agree with why they are there. We should all still appreciate the work each individual is doing abroad and take a minute to send them something so they know we are thinking of them during the holiday season.

You aren’t able to choose who gets the card, but you can write a personal message and choose the design for the outside of the card. I think this is a great and easy way to show our troops some love. Go check out their website and send one today!

Thanksgiving Season!

Now that Halloween has officially passed and we are about a week into November, it’s time to start thinking about the holiday season that is quickly approaching. Up next is THANKSGIVING! This is by far my favorite holiday of the year….family, friends, food…and you don’t have to buy anyone anything! This is the most important factor in my ranking system as a poor college student. Of course I love Christmas as well, but it definitely takes a toll on my bank account.

In honor of my favorite holiday, The History Channel has put together Thanksgiving Facts to let you know a little bit more about this tradition and it’s origins. For all of you readers that are into random trivia and information, this will be a gold mine for you. Make sure to check it out and start stretching your tummies for the Thanksgiving feast!

I wish more men embraced this side of themselves… the seersucker suit wearing-gin martini drinking-Kentucky Derby side. God it’s so sexy when done well!

I Die!

I am a die hard, super fan of Rachel Zoe! I love love love everything about her! I love her blousy tops, I love her fur jackets (which I can’t wear on principle, but still adore), I love her 70′s style, and mostly I love how much she loves fashion!

I realize that I’m dorking out by admitting to my obsession, but I can’t help it. When she wrote a book, I bought that book. When she started recommending shoes on Piperlime, I started buying those shoes! And while I realize that her life and her wardrobe are pretty much unattainable for 90% of this nation, I love the ideaology that we should always look our best because then we will always feel our best, it’s at the essence of what it is to be chic!

This is my new favorite website, brought to my attention by our web/blog designer extraordinaire Dan. I think the normal reaction to this site is supposed to be being grossed out… so why is it that almost everything makes me hungry??

Deep-fried grilled cheese? Yes.

Meatloaf birthday cake? Absolutely.

The McGangBang? Inappropriate name, but YES, sign me up for that too!
